'Underway is the only way' at Surf N' Ink is an exhibition I helped Jianna Lucia curate on the Gold Coast earlier this month.

I had hoped to have some artwork ready for it but all the organisation, troubleshooting etc, unfortunately didn't leave me enough time to create something in time.

On the whole the exhibit and event was wonderful! aside from the amazing art and live painters, the convention hosted some of the worlds best tattoo artists, roller derby, kickboxing and more.

Between water and land

I got it in my head the other day to watch Lady in the water again, made in 2006.

It's not a great title, and it is a little bit cheesey but really quite beautiful.

It a tale about a sea nymph/mermaid who comes to awaken inspiration in an individual, and finds it hard to return home.

It differs a little from your standard mermaid movie, although she is a sea nymph there are no fish tails or seashell pasties.

It's a tale about feminine powers and inspiration, about innocence, subtlety, beauty, vulnerability and togetherness.
The soundtrack is also very atmospheric and wondrous.
Its a bit slow to begin with but it creeps up on you, do watch if you haven't already!

Every girl is a mermaid, wet and longing on the inside,

like the ocean reaching out to caress the shore♡

This is my piece for the Rock 'N' Dolls show at the MondoPOP group exhibition in Roma Italy.

I made a few alterations from the original such as the angle of the head and lighting.

I normally don't work with such bright POPish colours but I think I pulled it off well good

The exhibition’s theme is related to strong women, reinterpreted characters in the Pop Surrealism art current with various attitudes: childish, rock, tattoo, creepy, and so on.

I thought I'd just leave some links and information on some local organizations that are good resources for cruelty free living. I have been vegan since aprox 1998, I'd say I was vegetarian 5% of that time.

I do not eat or drink anything that contains animal products or has been processed using animal products. I do not wear leather, fur, silk or any other fabric used from animal exploitation. I do set my own standards, some people are ok with second hand leather - I personally just don't like it but I'm ok with second hand wool.

Most importantly to me is being cosmetically cruelty free. The idea that girls who think bunny rabbits and other little pets are cute - but don't have a problem with wearing products that are tested by torture and death of those same animals - makes my blood run cold. It's the worst sort or evil - the sort that you wash your hands of because it's out of your sight and you don't have to deal with it.

I don't really talk about my life choice as a vegan unless it somehow is brought up, as it can be confronting for individuals that lead lifestyles that are based around misery and torture to react to if I go into my reasoning, so I generally avoid it. People need to make their own choices.

Having said that - any friend of animals is a friend of mine!

The Ethical Consumer Guide is a great resource that can help you with everyday products like sticky tape, pencils, stationary etc

As an artist I also work as a vegan, not using brushes that are made from animal hair or other materials that use animal products

Lime Crime has bright vibrant poppin' lipstick and eye shadow colours, it's one of my favourites, they have awesome pink cases with holographic unicorns on them too!!

Sugarpill is also very vibrant and well priced, with great loose and pressed eye shadows & lashes, as well as video makeup tutorials

Or locally Australis is always a winner!!

It's at Priceline, Big W, Kmart and Target stores and it's well priced, with a variety of products and colours

Do Not Go to the BodyShop , It is owned by Loreal who do test on animals

Lastly I generally avoid buying anything that is made in any asian countries, as there have been many instances of mislabeling , therefore I simply do not trust that the 'not tested on animals' label is not a misrepresentation of the truth

Had a bit of a change of heart about this lady since posting this
I only just learned of the 90 day sentence she served for animal cruelty in 2009, hoarding cats, 12 of which were found dead at her house. I am a huge animal lover, cats especially - so, as much as I'd like to believe people deserve a second chance, I can't help but be permanently put off this disturbed lady.

Here is a spoiler of the image I'm working on at the moment for a show in Italy. I've been wanting to paint this lady for a while, I was even going to curate a show about '80's Ladies' just so I could. She is one of those people who has been very imperative in my life. I still have a while to go before it's done, the 80's hair tease is proving to be challenging!

Here is a clip of one of my all time favourite songs and live performances, she really was an amazing performer, and still is I might add!! Back in the day when a musicians style was self produced and they had no media training or consumer psychology statistics informing them on how best to exploit the youth market to make $. I just found out about a jewelry design competition at Cute can Kill yesterday and I quickly came up with this character 'Pink Kitty Sprinkles' . The design has to involve Ice cream in some way.

When I first came upon Cute can Kill's facebook page a couple of months ago I was really thrilled because it reminded me of a poem I wrote sevral years ago and also because they have amazing pastel edible looking accessories!. I was tempted to do a Icereamcone Unicorn but there was already one there, as I expected there would be when using the theme Ice cream.

So this is the slightly embarrassing but cute poem I wrote in 2002 which also has Ice cream in it,

'Women's Intuition' Frida x Maria

Here is an all but finished drawing for the tribute to Frida show, it's called 'Women's Intuition' . It is really a cross between Frida and myself, mainly because I used myself as a model. Also, I did immersed myself in her reality for the past couple of months so I find it fitting that we blended together in the end in a strange way.

Wood is all together different from anything I have worked with and has it's challenges. I did three drawings on wood and each one, made of the same wood varied in striation/grain, which resulted in different contrast's when compared, even though I used the same graphite on all three. I didn't expect that, but I will most likely use it again in the future and try different mediums and effects.

Mexican Surrealism and Psycho Tropo!

My next Exhibition will be held at 19 Karen Gallery and it is a Tribute to Frida. My colour pallet has taken on some very bright and botanic colours I wouldn't normally use. I started to draw Frida in a realistic way and then became very bored with the idea of it, I am not one for realism, why not just take a photocopy or a picture if you want to mimic the world, not my idea of a good time. It took me some time but I put myself into Frida and made her really one of 'my' characters, with full respect to the woman, her trials, tribulations and accomplishments.

I do relate to her, culturally, we are both half Latin, half Hungarian and come from a very political background which accounts for something.

Through out the process I have also been listening to a lot of the Beach Boys and Harry Belefonte, he really reflects the crazy or 'Psychotropical' weather we have been having here in Melbourne, which reminds me a little of growing up in the tropics of far north QLD.

Sharpie Poster Competition

Speaker TV is hosting a Sharpie Poster design competition this weekend at St. Kilda Beach with the three finalists being published in Desktop Magazine. I have been chosen as one of the 10 finalists and will be doing some live drawing. It's a big beach party Event with a DJ competition aired live on Kiss FM at the after party where the winner of the Poster Competition will be announced.

I haven't done any art with Textas before so it will be an experience for me for sure! I don't expect to be a finalist, but I think it will be a fun all the same.

He licked my face a couple of times but the pictures turned out blurry!!! check out the guy in the background :)

The second picture was so much more sensual but I ran out of memory! Oh well I remember the warm wet sensation and that's all that matters :)

I dressed like the female version of him just for fun, trade mark white shirt and sneakers, but I had a mini acidwash denim skirt on rather then the white jeans.

Andrew W K's sweat and saliva over me- I can check that off my list.

He's a real charmer and his wife is a wonderful support. He is Beautiful.

Thirsty clover on a rainy day

It's been raining a lot here in Melbourne and there has been a lot of flooding interstate which is really quite sad for the wildlife and those experiencing loss of homes, loved ones and pets.

I saw this clover on someones veranda a few houses up from mine and took a photo on my phone.

He is just out of reach of the rain, he looks thirsty, I almost want to go up with a bucket and scoop some water on to him, I may do.

I've been watching too much Mushi shi and am starting to look at these clovers as little Mushi's, for now anyway. :)

'Milk Cap' - genus (lactarius luminous)

This is my new painting for The Volution Group Exhibition on this Thursday.

I knew I wanted to paint a mushroom girl breast feeding a glow bug, but it wasn't until I looked through my encylopedia of Mushrooms that I discovered the lactarius genus- 'Milk Caps' which was very fitting.

There are all sorts of milk caps, my favourite is the Lactarius deliciosus

I invented my own specie 'lactarius luminous'

'Her mothers Milk is used as fuel for bugs that glow like star-lit jewels'

Volution Exhibition

VOLUTION is a collective exhibition of fantastical, surrealist, digital and street art themes ... It is an exhibition of international/local established and emerging artists, curated and inspired by the arrival of the ‘father’ of visionary art – Alex Grey and his wife Allyson Grey as they tour the East Coast of Australia in January 2011.

This is the next show I will be participating in. The image I am working on for the show is still in progress, should be finished by tomorrow and then I'll be on holidays for a few weeks!

Xmas light and magic

I had a wonderful orphans Xmas day at my Bff's house who works at the National Gallery of Victoria.

As part of his job he creates light/sound installations for the children's area, and comes up with little experiments and fun stuff that I have the pleasure of playing with!

There is a great musical tea cup interactive installation in there at the moment, and I got a peek at one in the works, lots of virtual paint, kids and parents alike will love it.

This twinkly in house entertainment tickled my fancy!

The show Jason and I curated was a great, a vibrant night of Art and Tattoo's.

A good turn out considering the stormy weather.

I will be in the Gallery all month taking care of the show and getting a bit of painting and drawing in on the side.

Hanging the show was a much bigger task then I thought, a great experience.

Hello Clover

I promised a friend of mine that I would give him the next clover I found, if I found another. I saw this one a few blocks away from home after I got off the tram. I tried to take the earth under him too so that I could replant him, as I don't like to pick them. I don't even like cut flowers, I think they should be left alone where they are, potted plants are fine with me though :) As I was cupping the earth I accidentally broke his stem, I felt bad, bad for picking him like that. He lives in the kitchen for now in a cup with water and a bit of sugar in the bottom. I don't feel bad anymore, I get the feeling that he likes the attention and care. I'll give him to my friend in a week or so, he's getting bigger and he looks very happy where he is.

He closes his leaves at night and reopens them in the morning, he's very cute.

I just hope Lumin doesn't munch him down, he likes to chew his grass and he has a bit of a nibble on the oregano and lemon myrtle sometimes too!

I am now par of a local Agency/Collective of artists called 'Just Another Agency'. Toby and Melika used to operate and curate 696. They are very passionate and knowledgeable about local art/events which Is great because I would like to do more shows here in Australia.

Papaissue is something I am very excited about, it is a web collective of artists with Latin background. Some fascinating stuff on the website. I am delighted to say that I am the latest addition to the family, I mean familia :)

I created a cheeky little accessory label last month and I was having quite a bit of fun creating bits.

I took some promo shots for the online store and used myself as a model, quite modestly I think :) to show a diversity of girls who would/do wear the products.

As much as I initially enjoyed designing the accessories, I am not a huge fan of reproducing large numbers of the same thing in a row, so I am hoping to pass the business on to my nieces.

I do like design, but I do prefer to draw and paint! :D

When I was little one of the highlights of my life was waking up early on Saturday mornings to watch Jem. My favourite character in the Jem series is Danse, shes represents some of my favourite elements of the 80's.
This is her theme song in the series, it is often played when she is in an episode.

This is the first clover I have found outside of the pot plants and soil in the backyard and on the balcony.

Two new clovers! Three months ago I found a four leaf clover growing on my balcony,
it is just starting to get old and withered. Two days ago I found another one that
got munched by a caterpillar, and when I was showing it to my friend yesterday I found another one!

I also found two five leaf clovers, not sure what that means~

I've been having a bit of trouble with my vision lately, I was seeing things 2 dimensionally and not getting a good perspective. I went to see my Kaleidoscoptometrist Dr. Silver and he prescribed these glasses for me.

I 'm happy to say that I can once again see the true nature of existence, all the multi-facets available to the human eye. I wasn't able to afford the latest style so I had to get these thick black rimmed frames, but they still do the job.

Came across a Strange Loop, these things need to be nailed down to wooden surfaces for maximum results

My previous painting 'Escenta' was inspired by this movie, It's a wonderful Russian adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's 'The Little Mermaid', made in 1976. It's not quite on the same level as 'Valerie and her week of wonders' but still really delightful. If you like pretty and enchanted stories do look it up.

She lives in the ocean just off the coast of Qaanaaq in Greenland. Everyone's name there happens to be a palindrome. Below is the town emblem.

I am working on a new painting, twice the size of what I normally do and in half the time!

It's been a good educational challenge with a lots of art imitating life imitating art.

Coming up this Saturday at Ladies Luv Sketch City I have brainstormed a group collab on a large canvas I have been carrying around with me over the past 4 years! it's an Alice in Wonderland theme.

I am going to do the caterpillar because, as you can see, I have just worked on Alice and Cheshire and I always loved that Caterpillar. There will be four of us working on it. We all vary in style so it should be quite interesting.

As children our parents would read to us bedtimes stories of little mermaids, sleeping beauties, and little red riding hoods. These innocent stories often had evil lurking beneath the pages. What Disney failed to tell you is that, the mermaid dies, multiple suitors defiled sleeping beauty and the wolf ate grandma.

There are a lot of horrible things in our reality today and we all sometimes wish for a place or time where things are simpler and better. We find ourselves wanting the warmth of our childhood beds, the calming voice of our parents sending us of to sleep with our favorite story. Yet even in fairylands of beauty and glitter, evil things creep about in false glamour’s, such as the evil witch living in the gingerbread house or a beautiful sea nymph singing you into your watery grave.

Went and saw Catherine Campbell's exhibit last night. It was really sweet, lovely drawings. I have to say that Catherine is just as lovely as her art, a real doll. It's funny how you can recognize an artist by their works, It is some sort of strange phenomenon I believe. They leave a kind of trace, even if the work in no way resembles the individual physically.
